brothers. She comes from a poor family. When she was 4 years old, she got polio.
Polio causes paralysis in his left leg. Wilma had to wear heavy steel braces on
her legs to help her stand and walk.
The doctor who treated
her said that she would never walk all her life. But, her mother always said,
“Wilma, you can do anything what you want in life if you have the confidence, the
persistence, the courage and the passion to do it.” And she
always believe her mother.
When she was 9 years old,
she decided to not wear heavy steel braces on her legs. At first he walked with
a limp. But finally, she was able to walk normally like everyone else. After
that, she had a dream being a world runner. Many people underestimate her dreams.
Even though Wilma’s legs able to walk normally, but she doesn’t have much power
over normal people.
She took part in her life
first race and came last. Then, she took part in many races and always came
last. But, Wilma did not never give up. Finally, a day came when she stood
first. After graduating from senior high school, she went to Tennesse State
University and met a professional running coach by the name of Ed Temple. Ed
saw Wilma's talent and persistence. Ed then decided to train Wilma until Wilma
was accepted as a runner on the American Olympic team.
Because of her
perseverance, in the 1960 Olympics, Wilma Glodean Rudolph, the first black
woman to ever suffer from polio and paralysis, eventually won the Olympic prize
and won three gold medals in the 100-meter, 200-meter, and the 400-meter relay.
Wilma's dream came true because of a constant faith and struggle.
The story of Wilma Rudolph provides proof that dreams, beliefs, action with patience and perseverance can turning the weaknesses into extraordinary strength. Limitations do not prevent one from attaining success as long as that person holds his dream and always work hard to make it happen.
